Client vs. Artist: Retention

Lash artists want clients to return with good retention for a variety of reasons—client loyalty, more efficient appointments, and work pride. Clients want their lashes to have good retention because that’s what they paid for—lashes that look good and last. But when it comes to retention where does the responsibility lie? The answer is both! To achieve the best retention both the lash artist and the client have to do their part and we’re breaking down those parts here!

The Artist:

Assess the Lashes

It is the lash artists’ responsibility to assess the client’s lashes. Using the appropriate length, width, and fan depth on the client’s natural lash is crucial to lash health and retention. Assess the lashes, make changes where needed, and always use extensions that keep the integrity of the natural lashes.

Prep the Lashes

It is the responsibility of the lash artist to make sure the lashes are prepped at the start of the appointment. Lash prep as the artist includes, making sure the lashes are clean, provide lash wash or wash them as a service, removing grown out lashes, and using a pre-treatment if desired.

Application & Finishing Steps

Application includes using the correct amount of adhesive, isolating the natural lash, and placing the extension correctly. Application is key to good retention. The finishing steps of a lash appointment such as nano misting and sealant also contribute to overall retention and are the responsibility of the lash artist.

Education

It is the client’s responsibility to take care of their lashes between appointments, however it is the lash artists’ responsibility to educate clients on proper aftercare.

The Client:

Pre-Appointment Prep

The lash artist has to prep the lashes during the appointment but there is a different set of prepping steps that falls on the client. The client should come with clean lashes or be prepared to wash them at the appointment, brushed lashes and no makeup.

Aftercare

Aftercare can really make or break good retention and only the client is responsible for what happens to the lashes between appointments. Client aftercare includes using a lash wash, avoiding picking and pulling, sleeping carefully, and brushing regularly.

Correct Products

Along with aftercare, it is the client’s responsibility to always use extension safe products on and around the eyes. This includes avoiding oily products and not using mascara.

Scheduling

Both the lash artist and client can do everything above correctly, but if the client does not schedule regular and timely appointments it will reflect as poor retention. It is always best to pre-book, book multiple appointments, and avoid last minute scheduling.
